Great customer service
The folks at Stack Overflow really have their act together.

A couple weeks ago, I noticed I could no longer reach their site. I could reach other sites living on the same subnet, but stackoverflow.com was (and remains) a giant black hole. As I would expect, traceroute says traffic makes it well past my ISP, and even onto Peak 10's network. Since my problem was constrained to one host, I figured it was logical to reach out to the Stack Overflow folks and see if they knew of anything preventing me from connecting. This led to a rather ridiculous e-mail exchange…Collapse )

Somehow, an IP ban imposed on some totally unrelated host affects my ability to connect. Is that a new iptables feature? Is there a new "squint" match mode, that also matches addresses that look sorta kinda similar to the one in the rule?

Perhaps I should have posed my question to Server Fault instead. I can go there, if I don't mind none of the images or stylesheets loading.

Of course, I kindly pointed out the error. I actually followed up twice, but I never heard back again. No one even bothered to write "It's not our fault… figure it out yourself!" All was silent.

Wonderful. The good news—Stack Overflow Careers is quick to answer refund requests!

Edit: Still not sure what they're on about, but at least now they're onto something…Collapse ) No word, though, on whether I can do anything to convince them to grant me access again.

Edit #2: Apparently this is par for the course, dealing with these people. See StackOverflow.com advertisers, beware…

On hiring the right person for the job
It’s time to come clean. I don’t actually do my job.

Sure, I’m capable, and even willing. My employer, though, has a different idea. They recruited and hired me as an Application Developer, but I’m told now what they really like is my experience deploying a certain Open Source product.

This makes me wonder…Collapse )

In spite of this, I have gotten to work on a couple of awesome projects. They were simply awesome because I made them that way, and not because anyone was expecting anything great. While they seem grateful for the results in these cases, I’m convinced my employer otherwise has no idea what to do with me.

"While they are neutral, they do inject an odd coloration to the sound."

Man -- the grays on my monitor are very neutral, but for some reason the whole image has a purple cast to it.

I can has question...?
Why does Flash on Linux suck so damn much?!

What baffles me is that, with the latest 64-bit release, going to gmail is an instant slaughter by X (that is to say, it gets an X error and Firefox bails). I would just conclude the 64-bit release fails, but the 32-bit version does the same damn thing.

Other sites rendered useless? Hulu and any BBC page with a video (even if you don't try to play the video). Awesome!

Maybe I need to follow my own advice and get a Mac. Oh wai...

Four arrested over serious crime
Four arrested over serious crime

"Three men and a woman have been arrested on Tuesday by police investigating serious crime."

Having read this article, I feel I have a thorough understanding of recent events in that area. Any further detail would have been completely extraneous and distracting.
